This commitment to helping advisors achieve both financial and personal True Freedom™ led to the creation of Pinkerton Wealth Partners, where advisors can finally operate without compromise.
The journey to True Freedom™ in financial advising is not just about growing assets—it’s about liberating yourself from conflicts of interest, regulatory overreach, and restrictive structures that limit both advisor and client success. My career has taken me through every stage of the industry, from a commission-driven brokerage to leading a multi-billion-dollar RIA purposefully built to eliminate these systemic inefficiencies. If you’ve ever questioned whether you have the true autonomy to serve your clients’ best interests, I invite you to reflect on this evolution and consider your own path to True Freedom™. No matter which of the five stages your business currently finds itself in, you have the power to redefine your future. By partnering with Pinkerton Wealth, you can transform your practice into a model of independence, integrity, and long-term prosperity.

Like many advisors, my career started in the world of commission-based brokerage, where product sales and quotas ruled the day. I graduated from Stanford University in 1987 and joined a financial planning brokerage firm in San Jose, CA, where commissions were my sole source of income. I quickly realized that insurance commissions were significantly higher than mutual fund commissions, and like any young professional trying to make a living, I sold what paid the most.
However, I soon saw the conflicts of interest firsthand. Clients wondered, “Are you recommending this because it’s best for me, or because you’re incentivized to sell it?” The pressure to meet quotas created ethical dilemmas that didn’t sit right with me. This stage planted the first seed of doubt—there had to be a better way to serve clients with integrity. If you find yourself in Stage 1, Pinkerton Wealth can help you elevate your practice to a higher standard.

Hoping for more stability, I transitioned to a large bank wirehouse, enticed by brand credibility and institutional resources. Initially, it felt like an advancement—offering more sophisticated products with greater support. However, FINRA oversight loomed heavily, and despite the branding, commission-based conflicts remained. Compliance was focused more on regulatory checkboxes than on genuinely protecting clients’ best interests.
The true instability of this model became apparent when the bank laid off 120 advisors in my division, despite strong economic conditions. It was a sobering realization: my career was not within my control—it was dictated by corporate decisions beyond my influence. I knew I needed to pursue true independence, where my success was determined by my service to clients, not by sales targets or corporate restructuring.
If you are currently in Stage 2, Pinkerton Wealth can help you take control of your future.

Leaving the wirehouse, I became an independent financial advisor and partnered with the nation’s largest independent broker/dealer (IBD). Finally, I had the ability to choose the best products for my clients without a bank dictating my options. Yet, even with this newfound independence, true freedom remained elusive.
Despite the promise of autonomy, FINRA regulations still governed my practice. Worse, compliance departments at broker/dealers began over-interpreting regulations, creating excessive red tape to protect their own liability rather than supporting advisors. Compliance officers with little industry experience were enforcing misinterpreted $100 FINRA gifting rules, preventing me from offering educational dinners or client appreciation events.
I wanted to provide fee-only fiduciary advice, where clients paid for guidance—not product sales. It became clear that leaving FINRA oversight entirely was the only way to achieve real independence.
If you are in Stage 3, Pinkerton Wealth can help you break free and transition to an independent model.

Transitioning to a hybrid RIA model brought me closer to True Freedom™. I aligned with a more "RIA-friendly" broker/dealer while maintaining an independent RIA for fee-based accounts. This shift reduced my reliance on commissions and allowed me to offer fiduciary services. However, this was still not enough.
As my broker/dealer was acquired by a larger firm, they initially promised to preserve the hybrid RIA culture. Yet, within a few years, the familiar cycle repeated itself—bureaucracy increased, compliance tightened, and autonomy eroded. Meanwhile, I was already custodying assets through Charles Schwab, which identified only two broker/dealers as truly "RIA Friendly"—and mine wasn’t one of them.
The writing was on the wall. To achieve full independence, I needed to transition brokerage assets to an RIA-friendly platform and focus entirely on building an advisory business that was worth double the value of brokerage assets based on prevailing industry multiples.
If you are in Stage 4, Pinkerton Wealth can help you maximize your firm's true potential.

The final step was the most liberating. When all nine CFP® professionals in my office simultaneously canceled our FINRA licenses and left the broker/dealer behind, the transformation was immediate:
Uncompromised Fiduciary Standard – Every recommendation was now purely in the client’s best interest.
Stronger Client Relationships – Without commission conflicts, trust deepened exponentially.
Simplified Compliance – Free from FINRA, we focused on client service—not bureaucracy.
Increased Firm Valuation – Advisory assets command double the multiple of brokerage assets.
Elimination of Product Quotas – No longer bound to sales targets, we pursued client-driven solutions.
With FINRA licensing gone, liability plummeted, and my practice flourished under the RIA model.
Through my journey across seven brokerages and broker/dealers, one consistent theme emerged—ownership changes, compliance overreach, and conflicts of interest consistently worked against advisors and their clients. My family and I built a multi-generational RIA to solve these problems permanently.
True Freedom™ isn’t just financial—it’s about achieving what money can’t buy and death can’t take away: love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness and self-control. My early life experiences shaped my perspective:
Running 4.5 miles every morning for 7 years from age nine delivering newspapers in the Alaskan snow taught me discipline.
Being an athlete and Stanford concertmaster/classical violinist instilled in me the importance of diligence and perseverance.
Witnessing the devastating impact of a hedonistic worldview in college led me to embrace faith-based financial principles, which I have integrated into my practice.
